There are many different types of addictions. The most common we hear of are alcohol, drug, and tobacco addictions. Anyone who has an addiction is not at a total loss. There are many programs available should a person be willing to accept them and work through the program. Here are a few treatments a person can receive for common addictions.
The detoxing phase is very important. This is the stage where the patient is withdrawing from the drug or alcohol. The drug is slowly leaving their system. They must not use it or come around it. Detoxing can be very painful for a person because their mind and bodies have a dependency on it. To overcome it and help ease the pain there are medications that can be given to a patient.
Medication can be used as treatments for common addictions. They help ease the pain a person is going through as well as convinces the mind to slowly let go of the addiction. Some people are required to be on medications for 30 days and longer. The most common medicine given for heroin or morphine addicts is methadone and buprenorphine. These are very addicting drugs as well but are easier to control.
For those addicted to tobacco there are quite a few medication options available. Most of these nicotine replacements are available right over the counter such as sprays, gum, and patches. The effects are much milder. There are prescriptions available as well such as varenicline and bupropion.
Short and Long Term Inpatient Care
Depending on the circumstances a person can go into volunteer treatment facilities. Their stay can be short or long term. These facilities are also known as therapeutic because they try to focus on the individual as a whole. They will go through a detoxing process. They will be medicated if they choose. Some people prefer not to so not to take the medications so they won’t develop another dependency habit. They learn the 12 step treatment program and participate in individual and group therapy sessions. In therapy they address the root cause of their addiction.
Outpatient care patients receive treatment and therapy and are able to leave. The program lasts about 30 days or so and they will have a counselor. This does not have a high success rate for those with severe addictions because they’re able to leave and have access to the substance off site from the facility.
